Arts & Aesthetics
I was trained as a musician before I was trained as a researcher, and I have never treated the two as separate lives. Both are attempts to find structure in something that resists it.
Music
I perform on piano, violin, erhu, bamboo flute and guitar, I sing Peking opera and jazz, and I write my own songs. I also dance. Moving between a Western classical instrument, a Chinese traditional one, and an improvised idiom in the same week changes what you hear in all three.
Writing
I write poetry and theatrical reviews, the latter mostly as a way of paying close attention to a performance twice: once while watching, once while trying to say what happened.
Selected work
Recordings and selected poems go here. Each one can be a short title, a line or two of context, and a link: an audio file, a YouTube or Bilibili embed, or a PDF.
